Founded in 1918 in Tokyo as the Shokosha Watch Research Institute, Citizen became one of Japan’s largest and most innovative watchmakers. The brand’s defining contribution to horology is Eco-Drive (launched in 1995) — a light-powered quartz movement that eliminates battery replacement entirely. Eco-Drive watches recharge from any light source (natural or artificial) using a titanium capacitor with an effective lifespan of 10–20 years before requiring replacement.
Citizen’s recent innovations include Caliber 0100 (the world’s most accurate quartz movement at ±1 second per year), Satellite Wave-Air GPS timekeeping for travellers, and Caliber A060 with 1/20,000-second chronograph precision.
