Water Resistance Testing

Water damage is the single most expensive watch repair we see — most “water damaged” watches need full movement replacement because corrosion spreads quickly inside an unsealed case. A water resistance test after every service or battery change is the cheapest insurance you can buy for any water-exposed timepiece.

Modern luxury watches carry water resistance ratings from 30m (splash-proof) to 600m+ (professional dive watch). These ratings depend entirely on a system of rubber gaskets at the case back, crown stem, pushers, and crystal. Over time, these gaskets degrade, harden, and lose their seal — especially in tropical climates like Malaysia where heat and humidity accelerate rubber decay.

At DeChronos we use a Witschi Proofmaster S pressure tester — the same equipment used by authorised service centres — to verify water resistance to manufacturer-rated depths. Every test is accompanied by a written certification of the achieved pressure rating.

Why Regular Water Resistance Testing Matters

• Gaskets degrade over time — typically 1-3 years depending on use, climate, and exposure
• Battery replacement disturbs case-back seals — every battery change requires re-testing
• Impact and temperature changes affect integrity — a drop can crack a gasket invisibly
• Manufacturer warranty often requires regular testing — failure to test can void warranty
• Many “water resistant” watches are NOT waterproof from day one — manufacturing tolerances vary

The cost of a water resistance test (from RM 60) is a fraction of the cost of a full movement replacement (typically RM 1,500+). For divers and water-sport enthusiasts, we recommend testing every 12 months.

Our Testing Process

We follow a five-step procedure on every water resistance test:

1. Visual inspection — crown, pushers, case back gasket seating, crystal condition
2. Gasket condition assessment — if gaskets are hardened, deformed, or have set compression, we recommend replacement before the test
3. Dry pressure test — the watch is placed in the Witschi Proofmaster S and submitted to the manufacturer-rated pressure for the specified duration (typically 5–10 minutes)
4. Pressure drop analysis — any pressure drop indicates a leak; we identify the source (crown, case back, pushers, or crystal) and recommend targeted gasket replacement
5. Re-test and certification — after any gasket replacement, we re-test and issue a written certification showing the achieved pressure rating

We issue a 24-month pressure-test certification valid from the date of testing, on the condition that the watch is not opened or impacted within that period. If you bring your watch in for battery replacement during this period, we re-test at no extra charge.

⚠ All water resistance ratings are static pressure tests performed in laboratory conditions. They do not account for the dynamic pressure of movement, sudden temperature changes, soap residue, or impact — all of which can compromise real-world water resistance. Always rinse your watch with fresh water after swimming or showering, and have it pressure-tested annually.

Gasket Replacement

If your test reveals a failed gasket, we replace it with manufacturer-spec gaskets matched to your case reference. Gasket types we stock and replace:

• Case back gaskets (most common failure point)
• Crown gaskets
• Pusher gaskets
• Helium escape valve gaskets (Rolex Sea-Dweller, Omega Planet Ocean, Tudor Pelagos)
• Crystal gaskets (less common, but on older references)

We also stock pre-formed gasket kits for the most common brands (Rolex Submariner, Omega Seamaster, Seiko Prospex, etc.) so most gasket replacements can be done while you wait.

When to Test

• After every battery replacement — essential, included in our battery service
• Before any water exposure — if you haven’t tested in the past 12 months
• After any impact — even a small drop
• Annually — for any watch rated 100m or higher that you actually use in water
• Before resale — a current pressure-test certification adds value and buyer confidence

Pricing

Water resistance testing starts from RM 60. Gasket replacement from RM 40 per gasket (most batteries and small services require 1-3 gaskets). Full gasket kit replacement for divers from RM 180. Helium escape valve service quoted individually. Re-test within 24 months of last test is complimentary.
