Founded in 1881 in Kanda, Tokyo, Seiko has built a 145-year reputation on innovation and value. Seiko introduced the world’s first quartz watch (the Astron, 1969), the first automatic chronograph with a column wheel (1969), and the Spring Drive movement (1999) — a unique hybrid that combines a mechanical mainspring with electromagnetic regulation. Grand Seiko, the luxury sub-brand elevated to its own company in 2017, has earned a devoted following for its hand-finished movements that rival Swiss haute horlogerie at a fraction of the price.
The breadth of the Seiko catalogue is enormous — entry-level Seiko 5s, mid-range Prospex divers, premium Presage dress watches, and Grand Seiko luxury pieces — and each tier uses different movement families with distinct service procedures.
