Watch Strap Replacement Cost Guide Malaysia (2026): Leather, Steel, Rubber

Simon Leong, Founder & Master Watchmaker, DeChronos •

Why Watch Strap Replacement Matters

A watch strap replacement is one of the most common maintenance items — most owners replace their watch strap every 12 to 24 months due to wear, sweat, water exposure, or simply a desire for a different look. A new strap can completely transform the appearance of even an entry-level watch, and a quality leather or steel bracelet dramatically changes how the watch wears.

At DeChronos, we keep a curated selection of premium leather straps, OEM steel bracelets, ISO-certified rubber straps, and aftermarket deployant clasps in stock at our KL workshop. The strap fitting itself is straightforward and done while you wait.

How Often Should You Replace a Watch Strap?

Strap replacement depends on the material and how often you wear the watch:

  • Calfskin leather — Every 12 to 18 months with daily wear. Premium leathers can last up to 2 years with care.
  • Shell Cordovan (Horween) — Every 3 to 6 years. Extremely durable.
  • Steel bracelet — Refurbishment every 3 to 5 years (sanding / satin finish, replacement of bent links). Full replacement is rarely needed.
  • Rubber strap (ISO or OEM) — Every 2 to 4 years. Rubber solidifies with UV exposure and sweat.
  • Nylon / NATO — Every 6 to 12 months. Less expensive, easier to swap out.

The biggest sign you need a new strap is visible cracking, peeling, or permanent odour (a sign of deep skin absorption into the leather). Watch owners in Malaysia — given the humid climate — typically replace leather straps more frequently than owners in temperate regions.

Do I Need New Spring Bars with Every Strap Replacement?

We strongly recommend replacing spring bars with every strap swap. Spring bars are technically reusable, but:

  • Used spring bars can be weakened by repeated bending, increasing the risk of strap failure and dropping your watch
  • Cost is minimal — RM 8 to RM 16 per pair — relative to the cost of dropping a luxury watch
  • OEM spring bars are made from stainless steel with the correct compression fatigue rating; aftermarket bars can compromise the watch’s water resistance

We always install new OEM-specification spring bars during every strap replacement. The cost is included in our labour fee.

Can I Use Any Strap with Any Watch?

No — strap width must match the watch lug width. The most common lug widths are:

  • 18mm — Small vintage watches (ladies’ Cartiers, vintage Seikos, dress watches)
  • 19mm — Mid-vintage era (most 1950s-1970s watches)
  • 20mm — Common modern dress and field watches
  • 22mm — Large modern sports watches (Rolex, Omega, IWC, Tudor, Tag)
  • 24mm — Special applications (Panerai, some aviation watches)

Within the same width, straps can be interchanged between brands. A 20mm leather strap fits any 20mm-lug watch (Tissot, Hamilton, Junghans, etc.). Buckles can also be swapped separately.

OEM vs Aftermarket Straps

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) straps are the exact same straps the brand itself sells for that specific model. They are:

  • Expensive (often 2-4× the cost of aftermarket equivalents)
  • Fitted perfectly to the case curve and spring bar design
  • Highest quality construction and materials

Aftermarket straps are made by third-party artisans to the same lug width. Quality varies widely:

  • Premium aftermarket (Horween, Rios, Di-Modell) — comparable to OEM, often better leather
  • Mid-tier aftermarket — good quality, mass-produced, reasonable durability
  • Cheap unbranded — thin leather, weak spring bars, often sold in bulk packaging

We only stock premium aftermarket straps at our KL workshop. For vintage references or discontinued OEM straps, we can special-order through Singapore-based specialists.

Deployant Clasp Conversions

A deployant clasp is the metal buckle on a leather strap — instead of threading the strap through a pin buckle, the strap closes with a folding clasp mechanism. Deployant clasps:

  • Extend strap life by reducing wear on the holes
  • Add security with a double-release (fold-and-press) operation
  • Improve comfort with micro-adjustment on some models

We stock OEM-style deployants and aftermarket options from the German maker Staib and the Swiss maker Bonklip. Pricing ranges from RM 380 to RM 1,200 for the clasp plus RM 80 for fitting.

Water-Resistant Strap Systems

For sports watches worn in chlorinated or salt-water pools, we recommend ISO-certified rubber straps with stainless steel keepers. These straps:

  • Resist UV and salt water for 2-4 years before solidifying
  • Fit spring bar grooves with OEM-style mounting hardware
  • Are the only rubber straps rated for swim use

Aftermarket rubber straps sold without ISO certification should not be worn in the pool. They trap water and degrade within months.

Can I Get an Old Strap Refurbished?

For leather and rubber straps, refurbishment is rarely economic — replacement is cheaper and the result is better.

For steel bracelets, we offer:

  • Link replacement (broken or bent links)
  • Bracelet surfacing (rebrushing the satin sides to restore factory finish)
  • Polishing (if requested, with risk of changing the case line)
  • Clasp repair (broken springs, worn triggers)

Bracelet refurbishment costs RM 250 to RM 480 depending on the work needed.

How Long Does Strap Replacement Take?

Most strap fittings are completed while you wait. Bring your watch and your chosen strap (or pick from our showroom options) and we’ll fit it in 10 to 15 minutes, including:

  • Removing the old strap
  • Inspecting the spring bars for wear
  • Installing the new strap
  • Testing the fit and confirming operation

If you bring a new strap without your watch (e.g. you bought one online and want it fitted), bring the watch’s specific measurements and model reference. We can also size-link adjustment to your wrist — bring your old strap for reference if you have preferred fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a strap change void my warranty?

If the watch is still under manufacturer warranty, we recommend only OEM strap changes. An OEM strap change does not void warranty. Changing to an aftermarket strap while the watch is under warranty may technically compromise the brand’s water resistance certification. We advise OEM-only on dive watches under warranty.

Is my strap genuine leather?

Quality leather straps with surface finish often look like genuine leather. We can identify if a strap is genuine leather, faux leather, or composite material — but the only definitive test involves destruction, so we rarely run that. Visual and touch inspection is reliable for premium straps. Cheap imitations reveal themselves in stitching quality, edge finishing, and smell.

How do I look after my leather strap in Malaysia’s climate?

Rotate between two straps if you wear the watch daily. Use a leather conditioner every 6 months. Remove the strap when exercising (sweat is the most common killer of leather straps). Avoid storing the watch in direct sunlight.

Do you fit OEM Rolex bracelets?

No — we fit OEM-equivalent bracelets for all major brands. We do not stock actual Rolex, Omega, Cartier, or Patek Philippe OEM bracelets. For these brands, we recommend bringing the watch to the authorised dealer for OEM replacement parts. We can source and fit OEM-equivalent alternatives.
